Guidance at Ballymakenny College

Guidance Department Mission

Ballymakenny College’s Guidance and Counselling Department assists and encourages students to work towards achieving their potential by making informed choices about their lives in all respects – personal, social, educational and vocational. It also provides sensitive care and support to students when faced with life’s transitions and challenges.

There are two full time Guidance Counsellors in Ballymakenny College, Trish O’Reilly and Nicola McEvoy.

Our Guidance plan has been developed in accordance with Section 9(C) of the Education Act (1998) which requires schools to …. “ensure that students have access to appropriate guidance to assist them in their educational and career choices ….”. Section 9 (d) also requires schools “to promote the moral, spiritual, social and personal development of students.”

We provide three main areas of counselling

  • Personal guidance and counselling
  • Educational guidance and counselling
  • Career guidance and counselling

The Guidance and Counselling Department offers students both one-to-one counselling support and careers advice. We operate an open- door policy throughout the academic year. Students can request an appointment with the Guidance Counsellor at any stage throughout the school year.

Parents/Guardians are also encouraged to contact the Guidance Counsellor to discuss any matters or concerns relating to their child or to arrange an appointment. They are also encouraged to engage with the Guidance Counsellor at information evenings and parent-teacher meetings.

The Guidance Programme is based on the premise that guidance is both a whole school concern and a specialist area within education. In applying the continuum of support model, Ballymakenny College whole school guidance programme aims to meet the needs of students along a continuum, from a whole school approach to group and individualised approaches. The continuum model can be applied to guidance as follows: guidance for all, guidance for some and guidance for few.

Self-Evaluation Tests, Career Events, Video Guides, Student Feedback and School Guidance Plan are all available on this page. Also available are parent/student presentations and subject choice EBook.

The Guidance Counsellors are part of the Student Support Team and meet weekly to support students.
